Small businesses comprise 94%
of Wisconsin's entire business community. As a result, they are a
dominant force in the state's economy.
But until 1977 when we founded Wisconsin Independent Businesses Inc., small
business did not have an effective voice at the state capitol and few sources to turn
to for advice on common business problems.
Through WIB, politicians and bureaucrats are getting the small
independent business message. And people in small business are gaining
a voice along with help when they need it.
But there is still more power in numbers. The more small businesses we
represent, the more power each of us gains. And the more and better
services WIB can offer.
Your Voice
in the Capitol
It is well known that state legislators listen
to special interest groups and need the information they can provide.
The bigger the group, however, the better they listen. Before
WIB, big business and big labor had loud voices and the final say in
many major legislative matters.
Now we are taking your concerns about those matters directly to the
legislators for you. And we are getting results. Whether it's
taxation, unemployment compensation, hiring laws, state mandates or hundreds
of other issues which could impact your business, WIB members
have skilled representatives watching developments and making your needs
known.
WIB - like you - is a small independent business with one main
objective - to provide you with a direct line to legislative action and
information. As a member, you will be informed of legislative activity
which could affect your business and most importantly, have the opportunity
to respond and directly participate in the legislative process to ease the
government burden on your business and initiate needed reform.
Aid on the Bureaucratic
Battlefront
As you well know, law is not necessarily made
in the legislature; often bureaucratic interpretation of law presents just
as many problems for small business.
So our efforts turn in that direction as well. Because our people are
well-versed in how bureaucrats administrate and why, we've found we can not
only answer your questions, but are able to assist you and provide necessary
information in cases involving unemployment compensation case, hiring
difficulties, DNR dictums, sales tax rulings and the like.
You and WIB can produce
results
WIB's action has resulted in
many meaningful and money-saving moves by the legislature and state
agencies.
Among many other things, WIB has been changes to the unemployment compensation system
to protect the small businesses of Wisconsin. WIB
continues to work on matters such as business taxation, small claims
rights, capital gains reform and the costs of doing business in Wisconsin.
Each session of the legislature today sees the introduction of hundreds of
bills that can in some way affect small business. WIB is
there, assessing each and planning a course of action to protect our
members. Help Yourself Be Heard
We know there is much to be done, and we are
ready to do it for you. But small business representation at the state
level must exercise a power that only numbers can give it. That means
we must have your participation.
